Target subscribers by activity and engagement
Segment your audience using opens, clicks, and other engagement to reach the right people. Behavioral targeting lets you build audiences from what subscribers actually do — who opened a recent Broadcast, who clicked a link, who has gone quiet — so each Edition reaches the people most likely to respond.
Before you begin
- Make sure the Broadcasts you want to target on have already been sent and have collected engagement data. Very recent sends may still be gathering opens and clicks.
- Confirm your subscribers have the profile fields (such as region, role, or lifecycle stage) you plan to combine with engagement filters.
- Know which behavior you want to target: opened, clicked, did not open, or did not click — and over what time window.
- You need permission to create or edit audience segments in your account (confirm the exact steps in your account).
Steps
- Open the audience or segment builder from your subscriber list (confirm the exact steps in your account).
- Create a new segment (or edit an existing one) and add a rule based on engagement — for example, opened or clicked a specific Broadcast, or did not open within a chosen number of days.
- Optionally add more rules and choose whether subscribers must match all conditions or any of them, so you can combine engagement with profile fields (for example, clicked in the last 30 days and region = West).
- Preview the segment to see the estimated subscriber count and a sample of who matches.
- Save and name the segment clearly (for example, "Clicked — Spring Launch") so it is easy to reuse.
- When you build your next Edition, select this segment as the audience for the Broadcast.
Result
Your segment now updates as engagement changes, and you can target it from any Broadcast. Confirm success by checking the segment's subscriber count before sending and, after the Broadcast, comparing open and click rates against sends to your full list.
