Apply Suppression to a Broadcast

Apply a suppression list to a Broadcast so specific subscribers are skipped at send time, even if they belong to the audience you are targeting. Use this to honor opt-outs, exclude a competitor or internal domain, or hold back a segment for a follow-up send.

Before you begin

  • Confirm you have an Edition ready to send from your Project Folder.
  • Have the suppression list (or lists) prepared. This can be an uploaded list of subscriber addresses or a saved segment you want to exclude.
  • Understand the difference between a per-Broadcast exclusion (applies only to this send) and the account-wide suppression list (applies to every send automatically).
  • Suppression is subtractive: it removes matching subscribers from the send, it does not add anyone.

Steps

  1. Open the Edition and go to the send or audience setup for the Broadcast.
  2. Locate the suppression (or "exclude") option alongside the audience selection. (confirm the exact steps in your account)
  3. Choose the list or segment you want to exclude, and add it as a suppression source.
  4. Add more lists if needed — subscribers matching any applied list are removed.
  5. Review the estimated recipient count; it should drop by the number of matched, suppressed subscribers.
  6. Save the audience settings, then schedule or send the Broadcast.

Result

The Broadcast delivers only to subscribers who are in your target audience and not matched by any applied suppression list. After sending, the delivery report shows the suppressed count separately from bounces and unsubscribes, so you can confirm the exclusions were applied.
