Collect SMS opt-ins with a keyword

A keyword campaign lets people join your texting list on their own terms: they text a short word (for example, JOIN) to your number, and the platform records their consent and adds them as a subscriber. This is the cleanest way to grow an opted-in SMS audience, because each subscriber initiates the request and receives a confirmation.

Before you begin

  • An active SMS sending number (a long code, toll-free number, or short code) enabled on your account.
  • Permission to create keywords and edit SMS auto-replies (confirm the exact steps in your account).
  • A short, memorable keyword that isn't already in use. Keep it one word, avoid spaces, and check availability before you promote it.
  • The exact opt-in language your program requires (program name, message frequency, "Msg & data rates may apply", and how to get help or stop).

Steps

  1. Open the SMS area and create a new keyword. Enter the word subscribers will text and attach it to your sending number.
  2. Set the confirmation (opt-in) auto-reply. This first message should name your program, state message frequency, and include Reply STOP to cancel, HELP for help.
  3. Choose where new opt-ins are stored — the subscriber list or Folder that should receive them — so you can target them in a later Broadcast.
  4. (Optional) Add a double opt-in step that asks subscribers to reply YES to confirm before they are fully subscribed.
  5. Save and activate the keyword, then send a test by texting it from your own phone.
  6. Promote the keyword everywhere your audience sees you: email Editions, your website, printed materials, and social posts (for example, "Text JOIN to 55555").

Result

When someone texts your keyword, they receive your confirmation message and are added as a subscriber with a timestamped consent record. You can verify by checking that your test number now appears in the target list.
