Open rates are lower than expected
Understand the reporting and deliverability factors that suppress opens and how to improve them.
Symptom
After a Broadcast, the reported open rate is noticeably lower than your usual baseline or than comparable Editions. Clicks, replies, or downstream conversions may look healthier than opens would suggest — a sign that opens are being under-counted rather than that subscribers ignored the message.
Likely causes
Ranked from most to least common:
- Privacy-driven under-counting. Opens are measured by a tracking pixel. Mail apps that pre-load or block images (notably Apple Mail Privacy Protection) suppress or inflate-then-mask real opens, so genuine reads go unrecorded.
- Images or open tracking disabled. If the Edition has tracking turned off, or subscribers read with images blocked, no open is registered.
- Deliverability problems. Messages landing in spam/junk, or being throttled or blocked, never get the chance to be opened. Authentication gaps (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and poor sender reputation are the usual culprits.
- Weak subject line or preview text, or sending at a low-engagement time, reducing the share of subscribers who bother to open.
- List quality. Stale, unengaged, or role-based addresses (info@, sales@) drag the rate down.
- Reporting scope confusion. Comparing unique vs. total opens, or an in-flight Broadcast whose opens are still accumulating.
Fixes
- Confirm the measurement first. Compare unique open rate to click and conversion trends. If clicks are steady while opens fell, treat it as under-counting and lean on click-through as your engagement signal (confirm the exact metric definitions in your account).
- Verify open tracking is enabled on the Edition before you Broadcast.
- Check deliverability. Confirm SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are aligned for your sending domain, and review recent bounce and complaint trends. See the related deliverability pages below.
- Clean the list. Remove hard bounces and long-term non-openers, and review the suppression list so you send to engaged subscribers.
- Test subject lines and send time. A/B different subject lines and preview text, and try alternate send windows.
- Segment out privacy-affected clients where possible, and set expectations that raw open rate now understates real reach.
Still stuck?
If deliverability checks pass and opens remain low across multiple Broadcasts, gather the Edition name, Broadcast date, and affected segment, and contact your platform administrator or support team for a reputation and inbox-placement review (confirm the exact support channel in your account).
