Create Your First Segment
A segment is a saved filter that narrows your audience to the subscribers who match rules you choose — for example, everyone in a particular region, or everyone who opened your last Broadcast. Sending to a focused segment instead of your whole list makes each message more relevant, lifts engagement, and reduces unsubscribes.
What you'll build
By the end of this tutorial you'll have a reusable, named segment — say, "Active subscribers in the West region" — that you can select as the audience for any Broadcast.
Before you begin
- Know the audience or list you want to filter.
- Decide the rule(s) that define the group (a subscriber attribute, a location, or an engagement behavior such as opened or clicked).
- Make sure the subscriber fields you plan to filter on actually contain data — a filter on an empty field returns no one.
Steps
- Open the audience area and choose New Segment (or the equivalent create action). (confirm the exact steps in your account)
- Give the segment a clear, descriptive name so you and teammates recognize it later.
- Add your first rule: pick a subscriber field (for example, Region), an operator (for example, is), and a value (for example, West).
- Add more rules if needed, and set whether subscribers must match all rules or any of them.
- Preview the estimated match count to confirm the segment isn't unexpectedly empty or huge.
- Save the segment.
Next steps
- Build an Edition and select your new segment as its audience before you send.
- Sharpen targeting with behavior rules using report metrics.
- Learn how growing and organizing your list feeds better segments in Audiences.
